FOCUS: - Worship Thoughts 2/17/2013

This week we will be looking at the story of Joshua.  The narrative in Joshua covers Israel's conquering of the land of Canaan which God promised to them.  Joshua was a mighty leader from God and lead the nation's army in battle against the many nations who inhabited the land.

It just so happen's that this week at our church, we will be installing additional Shepherd's to lead our congregation.  I am so happy to be working alongside all of these men whom God has placed in this role.

This week we are going to celebrate all of the things God has done for this faith community and will be looking forward to all the many great things He will do.

O Worship the King
God is the one who has shielded and defended us.  He is our King who leads us and protects us in His wonderful might.  None can compare to His glory and none will stand in the way of His Kingdom.  And He shall reign forever and ever.

Let God Arise
This is one of the newer songs we have been singing, and I just love the message it has.  The song opens with God's mighty acts and commands us to "come and see what He has done for us, tell the world of His great love.  Our God is a God who saves!"

To God Be the Glory
As I have mentioned before, Fanny Crosby is easily one of my favorite hymn writers.  This song continues our rejoicing in the wonderful things that God has done for us, but asks us to focus on His ultimate act of giving us Jesus Christ.  For that, we pour out our praise!

Without Him
There was no greater leader than Jesus Christ.  As disciples, Jesus is our leader and our Great Shepherd.  Without Him, we would be like a ship without a sail drifting away at sea.  Our life would truly be hopeless, but as the hymn writer says "But with Jesus, thank God, I'm saved.

Hallelujah, What A Savior
I just really love this song.  It is as interesting lyrically as it is musically.  The depth of the lyrics of this song just sends chills up my spine.  I love songs that cause me to pause and just bask in the beauty of the story being told.  This is just a beautiful hymn that I hope will focus your mind on the death and resurrection of Christ.

The Battle Belongs to the Lord
For several weeks now we have seen God doing amazing things in The Story.  This week, we experience God as the warrior who leads His people to victory.  I am glad I serve a God that allows nothing to stand in His way.  Even when darkness floods in and evil seems to over take me, God will be victorious.

Shout to the Lord
This will be the first song in a set of hymns that let us celebrate all the great things that God has done in our lives.  The line "let every breath all that I am never cease to worship you" gets me every time because that is the deepest cry of my heart.  I hope that in every moment, good or bad, God is praised and lifted up.

Glorify Thy Name
I love songs that have a simple and clear message.  This song couldn't be more clear:  "Father we love you, we worship and adore You.  Glorify thy name in all the Earth."

How Great is Our God
I think it is safe to say that Chris Tomlin is one of the greatest praise song writers of this generation.  "How Great is Our God" will be one of those songs that will stand the test of time.  It's really hard to sing this song and not pour out your heart in praise.

How Great Thou Art
The chorus of this song is so beautiful and moving.  Like "How Great is Our God," it is hard to sing this one without any emotion.  "Then sings my soul" is an line that gives the image of an imbedded nature to praise God.  We are created to praise God and it's songs like this that awaken that truth deep within my bones.  God is great!
